5日昼前には500メートルまで接近し、搭載した「衝突装置」を切り離す。装置は40分後に爆発し、銅でできた弾丸を小惑星の表面に撃ち込む。
探査機は装置分離の約20分後にはカメラも放出し、1キロ離れた所から撮影する。
